Overview: Becoming Certified Through the CPGA and the NCCP

The Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association (CPGA), in partnership with the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) and the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is now able to offer all CPGA members access to the best instructional and coaching information in the world. The sport of golf now has full recognition from Sport Canada and, along with 65 other sports, is part of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). This initiative will allow members of the Canadian PGA to identify themselves as having a certified level of expertise in the field of instruction and coaching in golf. Their certification will allow members to differentiate themselves with club owners as well as the golfing public.

The certification program has been developed taking into account all levels of participation
within the sport of golf, ranging from beginners to elite tour players. All CPGA workshop
participants will now have access to the tremendous body of world class research available
through the Coaching Association of Canada as well as the prestige that goes with being
certified by one of the most highly respected associations in instruction and coach education in the world.

All apprentice level candidates of the Canadian PGA must complete Instructor Beginner
Golfers and Instructor: Intermediate Golfers as part of their basic training program. Once the requirements for these two levels of certification are completed, the individual is free to select any of the remaining instructional or coaching certification programs. Normally, individuals will select the programs that match the level of the participants that they work with or aspire to work with.

All current Class “A” members are encouraged to take any of the programs that fit their needs as dictated by their clientele.

The three streams of the CPGA certification program are:

1. Community Sport – deigned for volunteer instructors interested in introducing the sport of golf to brand new participants. The Community Sport stream has only one context – the Future Links Leader program.

2. Instruction – designed to develop the knowledge and skills needed to teach golfers at different levels of ability. The Instructional stream has three contexts:
Instructor Beginner (IB) - prepares instructors to teach beginner golfers
Instructor Intermediate (II) - prepares instructors to teach intermediate playing skills
Instructor Advanced (IA) - prepares instructors to teach advanced playing skills

3. Competition – designed to develop the knowledge and skills needed to coach competitive golfers. The Competitive stream has four contexts:
       Coach New Competitors (CNC),
       Coach Developing Competitors (CDC),
       Coach High Performance Competitors (CHPC),
       Coach Elite Competitors (CEC).
